Happy Earth Day! I know the actual Earth Day was last Saturday, but since every day is really Earth Day (and since April is Earth Month), the greeting still applies. Thank you to the over 125 hearty volunteers who braved the Chicago weather on Saturday to join us for our Earth Day Stewardship event. We truly saw four seasons in one day (and even in one hour). Together we cleaned up the park around North Pond, removed invasive species, and weeded at the Goethe monument to get the park ready for the busy season. The event also kicked off our regular North Pond Gardener workdays.
North Pond Gardeners meet every other Saturday from April to October and help us take care of the natural areas around North Pond. You can learn more and sign up for upcoming workdays here. We also had several organized groups join us on Saturday. If you have a group and are looking for a great volunteer opportunity that helps us help North Pond and the park, you’re invited to join us for a special workday for your group. Learn more here.
Those of you who visit north Pond regularly will notice that we installed new signs last week. For those who haven’t visited in a while, the signs focus on North Pond’s next step: trees and plants. With major work now complete, over 70 new trees and hundreds of new native plants will be planted along North Pond’s shoreline in early May. These will join the thousands of new native plant seeds that were sown earlier this spring and that have already started to sprout. We can’t wait for these important additions to North Pond and hope you will enjoy watching them bloom, grow, and prosper throughout the season and years to come. We also ask that you help these plants and trees get established and enjoy North Pond from outside of the installed fencing. Thank you for helping us help North Pond!
